What NBN speed do I need?
Faster isn't always better value. The right nbn speed depends on how many people share the connection and what you do online.
A rough guide
| Speed | Suits | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 1–2 light users | Email, browsing and standard-definition video. |
| 50 Mbps (Home Standard) | 2–3 people | HD streaming and video calls at the same time. |
| 100 Mbps (Home Fast) | Most families | Several people streaming, gaming and working from home at once. |
| 250 Mbps (Home Superfast) | Larger households | 4K streaming, big downloads and uploads. |
| 500 and 1000 Mbps (Ultrafast, Hyperfast) | Heavy users | Many devices, large file uploads, multiple people working from home. Only available on some connection types. |
Things that affect your real speed
- Connection type. Speeds available depend on how your home connects to the nbn network (for example fibre to the premises versus fibre to the node). Ask a provider what's available at your address.
- Your Wi-Fi. A slow or badly placed router can hold back a fast plan.
- Busy times. Choose the lowest tier that feels comfortable in the evening, when most people are online at once.
Don't overpay for speed
Higher tiers cost more every month. If everyone in your home is streaming and browsing without problems, a middle tier is often plenty. You can usually change plan later if your needs grow.
